ADAMS PULLS OFF 10TH O'REILLY USCS WIN OF THE SEASON IN SUMTER

August 14, 2005
SUMTER, SC -
Kenny Adams of Malabar, FL cruised to his tenth O'Reilly United Sprint Series feature race win of the season Saturday night at Sumter Speedway.  The series' National point leader put his Milk Movers, Inc./Goodson Farms Shaw/Ott on the point on lap 12 of the 30-lap race, and never looked back.

Danny Martin Jr. of Sarasota, FL couldn't catch Adams in lapped traffic late in the race, and had to settle for second in the Martin Structures, Inc/Food Grade Transport Schnee/ZRE.  The 19-year-old driver was the SpeedMart Young Gun of the Race, and he also won the Engler Machine and Tool first eight-lap heat race.

The defending and four-time O'Reilly USCS National Champion Terry Gray of Bartlett, TN finished third in the C&B Mushrooms/Wendy's Maxim/Wesmar after starting eighth.  Gray was the Huggins Cams Hard Charger of the Race, and he also won the six-lap Air Flow Research Power Dash.

Matt Tiffany of Daytona Beach, FL led for eight laps, but ended up fourth in the Independent Printing Shaw/Ott.  Tiffany was also the Robison Racing Products Rookie of the Race, and the Outlaw Racing Disc Brakes Fast Brake Award winner for leading the race on lap ten.  The 16-year-old driver also won the ButlerBuilt second eight-lap heat race.

Bryn Gohn of Malabar, FL was fifth in the Milk Movers, Inc./Goodson Farms Shaw/Ott.  The K&N Filters Pole Award winner Justin Collett of Townsend, DE came back from a lap one spin to finish sixth in the Collett & Sons Welding JEI Performance/Kriner, and Jeremy Scott of Franklin, GA took the seventh spot in the Scott's Plumbing Pro Lite/June Bug.

Brice Wrenn of Lexington, SC came back from an early race spin to finish eighth in the Stainless Fabricators Maxim/Gaerte, and Bronzie Lawson of Southern Pines, NC took the ninth spot in the Curtis Barnett Electrical Avenger/Winford.  Lawson also won the four-lap Koolbeans Trophy Dash.  Bruce Cline of Apex, NC rounded out the top ten in the 31-W Insulation Stealth/Engler.

Collett took the lead from the pole position at drop of the green flag, but slid high in the turn two, and sailed off the track to bring out the caution flag.  Collett had to surrender the pole for the restart, and go to the back of the pack for bringing out the caution flag.  That gave Randy Helton of Palmetto, GA the pole for the restart.

Helton led when the green flag came back out in the Helton Transmissions Maxim/ERI, followed by Tiffany, Martin, and Adams.  Debris on the backstretch brought out the caution flag on lap four.  Tiffany got under Helton in turn three after the restart to take the lead.  Wrenn spun in turn one on lap six for the third caution flag.

On the restart, Tiffany pulled away while Martin and Adams, who had passed Helton for second and third respectively, swapped the second spot three times on lap seven.  Adams was able to take over the second spot on lap eight.  Helton slowed and stopped on the high side of turn two on lap 12 with a broken front end to bring out the fourth caution flag of the race.

During the caution flag period, a light rain shower arrived at the track, but didn't dampen the clay surface enough to stop the event.  O'Reilly USCS officials asked the drivers about the track conditions on the RACEceiver one-way radio, and the drivers gave the track a thumbs up for the restart. The rain quickly subsided after the restart.

Tiffany led Adams and Martin down for the restart, while Johnny Bridges of Cherryville, NC had charged up into the fourth spot after starting his C&B Mushrooms/Stainless Fabricators J&J/Bridges Ford in the 11th spot.  Gray restarted in fifth, and Collett had worked his way back into the sixth spot.

Tiffany covered the bottom groove on the restart, but Adams stepped to the outside and rode the rim coming off the fourth turn to take the lead.  Once he was out in front, the "Malabar Missile" checked out on the field.  With less than ten laps to go, Martin worked around Tiffany for the second spot, but Adams was gone.

Bridges was running fourth when his brakes went out on lap 27, and he sailed off the backstretch to bring out the fifth and final caution flag.  For the restart, Adams had the luxury of having four lapped cars between himself and Martin for the four-lap dash to the finish.

When the field went green, Gray passed Tiffany for the third spot, and Martin got around one of the lapped cars.  When Adams took the checkered flag, he had a half-lap advantage on Martin.

The O'Reilly USCS will travel to North Alabama Speedway in Tuscumbia, AL on August 19 and Garnertown Speedway in Luray, TN on August 20 for its next two events that will award both National and Mid-South Thunder Tour points.
