ADAMS SAILS TO 14TH O'REILLY USCS WIN OF THE SEASON IN FAYETTEVILLE

September 10, 2005
FAYETTEVILLE, NC -
Kenny Adams of Malabar, FL drove the Milk Movers, Inc./Goodson Farms Shaw/Ott to his 14th O'Reilly United Sprint Car Series win of the season on Saturday night at Fayetteville Motor Speedway. Adams passed early race leader Terry Gray of Bartlett, TN on lap eight, and then checked out on the field in the 30-lap feature race.

The 2000 O'Reilly USCS National Champion extended his National point lead in posting his series career-leading 89th win.  After starting sixth, Adams was also the Huggins Cams Hard Charger of the Race.

The defending and four-time O'Reilly USCS National Champion Gray had to settle for second in the C&B Mushrooms/Goodson Farms Maxim/Wesmar, and also won the Engler Machine and Tool first eight-lap heat race.  Brice Wrenn of Lexington, SC finished third in the Stainless Fabricators Maxim/Gaerte, and also won the four-lap Koolbeans Trophy Dash.

Matt Tiffany of Daytona Beach, FL took the fourth spot in the Independent Printing Shaw/Ott.  The 16-year-old driver was the SpeedMart Young Gun of the Race, and the Robison Racing Products Rookie of the Race.  Tiffany also won the five-lap Air Flow Research Power Dash.

Johnny Bridges of Cherryville, NC finished fifth in the C&B Mushrooms/Stainless Fabricators J&J/Bridges Ford.  K&N Filters Pole Award, and ButlerBuilt second eight-lap heat race winner Bruce Cline of Apex, NC was sixth in the 31-W Insulation Stealth/Engler.  Bryn Gohn of Malabar, FL drove the Milk Movers, Inc./Goodson Farms Shaw/Ott to a seventh-place finish.

Bronzie Lawson of Southern Pines, NC finished eighth in the Curtis Barnett Electrical Avenger/Winford.  Chad Allum of Kannapolis, NC took the ninth spot in the ButlerBuilt Prowler/Chrisco, and Troy DeCaire of Tampa, FL rounded out the top ten in his first-ever sprint car start on dirt driving the American Trading Post and Pawn Avenger/Skeeter.

The action started early in the 30-lap feature, when Danny Martin Jr. of Sarasota, FL spun off the top of the second turn banking on the first lap of the race, ending up on his side.  Martin's crew thrashed to change the wing and repair the wing supports, but they couldn't get the work finished in time for the restart after the red flag period.

Gray took the lead from his outside front row starting spot on the restart, and Adams blasted around the outside to move from sixth to second on the first lap.  Cline settled into the third spot followed by Gohn, Wrenn, and Allum.  Dustin Apple of Elon, NC spun the Apple Racing Maxim/Jerico in turn two on lap five for the second caution flag.

Martin was able to return to the track with a new wing for the lap five restart, but once the field got up to speed, the wing collapsed on the Martin Structures, Inc/Food Grade Transport Schnee/ZRE, and Martin was done for the night.  That earned the 19-year-old driver the Weld Racing Hard Luck Award.

The night wasn't all bad for Martin because during qualifications he set a new track record and earned $300 from C&B Mushrooms.  Martin cut a fat lap around the 4/10-mile clay oval in 15.684 seconds for an average speed of 91.813 miles per hour.  That beat the old mark of 15.836 seconds set by Bridges on July 16.  Martin, Bridges and Adams all beat the old track record.

Gray led the field down for the restart, and Adams stepped up to challenge for the lead, but the caution was back out on lap six when Apple executed his second turn two spin.  The top ten for the restart was Gray, Adams, Cline, Gohn, Wrenn, Allum, Tiffany, Bridges, Lawson, and R.J. Johnson of Decatur, TN in the Tinsley Engineering/Georgia Performance Graphics J&J/ZRE.

Johnson brought out the fifth and final caution flag of the race on lap eight when he stalled on the backstretch with a steering problem.  Adams once again stepped up to challenge Gray for the lead on the restart.

Adams stepped to the outside of Gray going into the third turn, and took the lead coming off the fourth turn.  Wrenn and Tiffany passed Gohn on lap nine to move up to fourth and fifth respectively, and Wrenn dove under Cline in turn four on lap 12 for the third position.  Tiffany climbed to fourth, passing Cline on lap 13.

By the halfway point of the 30-lap feature race, Adams had checked out to a full straightaway lead over Gray, and extended that to a half lap by lap 20. Wrenn and Tiffany were putting on a good show racing for the third spot. Tiffany got inside Wrenn in turn two on lap 25, but Tiffany had to lift for a lapped car, and Wrenn held on for the position.

The next two events for the O'Reilly United Sprint Car Series will be on September 23 at Memphis Motorsports Park and on September 24 at Thunder Ridge Speedway in Lexington, TN.  Both events will award National and Mid-South Thunder Tour regional points.
