SWINDELL ROLLS TO FIFTH O'REILLY USCS ASPHALT THUNDER WIN IN MOBILE

October 9, 2005
MOBILE, AL -
Kevin Swindell of Bartlett, TN was a young man in hurry Saturday night, as the 16-year-old third-generation driver rolled to his fifth O'Reilly United Sprint Car Series Asphalt Thunder Tour win of the season at Mobile International Speedway driving the York Excavating/Wirtgen America Maxim/Kistler.

Swindell started on the pole, led all 30 laps of the feature race, and outran the O'Reilly USCS National point leader Kenny Adams of Malabar, FL for the win.  Adams could get close to Swindell, but couldn't make the pass for the win, and had to settle for second in the Milk Movers, Inc./Goodson Farms Shaw/Ott.

Swindell was the K&N Filters Pole Award winner by the luck of the draw. Swindell also earned the Robison Racing Products Rookie of the Race Award, the SpeedMart Young Gun of the Race Award, and the Outlaw Racing Disc Brakes Fast Brake Award.

Swindell started off the evening by lowering his own Mobile International Speedway track record by two-tenths of a second.  Swindell toured the ½-mile high-banked paved oval in 14.487 seconds for an average speed of 124.249 miles per hour.  It was Swindell's eighth fast time honor this season, and his sixth track record.

The O'Reilly USCS Asphalt Thunder Tour point leader Wayne Reutimann Jr. of Zephyrhills, FL took the third spot in the Case Contracting/James Rivard GMC Hurricane/Snyder, and Danny Martin Jr. of Sarasota, FL was fourth in the Martin Structures, Inc./Food Grade Transport Shaw/ZRE.

Ryan Myers of Eldorado, OH came back from a lap two tangle to finish fifth in the Garrett-Myers Farms Clincher/Garrett/Myers.  Myers worked his way back into the top ten in 15 laps, and went from tenth to fifth in the last ten laps of the race.

The defending and four-time O'Reilly USCS National Champion Terry Gray of Bartlett, TN drove the C&B Mushrooms/Goodson Farms Maxim/Wesmar to a sixth-place finish, and Keith Butler of Riverview, FL was seventh in the Butler Racing Butler/J&T.

Asphalt Late Model veteran Dave Mader III of Irvington, AL finished eighth in his second start in a winged outlaw sprint car driving the Ardis Automotive J&J/Ardis.  Mader came from the 13th starting spot to earn the Huggins Cams Hard Charger Award.

Bryn Gohn of Malabar, FL salvaged a ninth-place while upside-down, as he flipped his Milk Movers, Inc./Goodson Farms Shaw/Ott on the last turn of the last lap while running fourth.  Frank Scimeca of Tampa, FL rounded out the top ten in the American Trading Post and Pawn Skeeter/Skeeter.

Swindell, the youngest driver in the race, started next to the oldest driver in the race, 60-year-old Wayne Reutimann Sr. of Zephyrhills, FL in the Case Contracting/James Rivard GMC Hurricane/Snyder.  Swindell took the lead in the first turn followed by Reutimann Sr., Adams, Reutimann Jr. and Matt Tiffany of Daytona Beach, FL in the Independent printing Hurricane/Ott.

By the second lap, Myers moved up to challenge Tiffany for the fifth spot, and the two cars tangled going into the third turn.  Both machines slid off the track on the high side to bring out the red flag.  Both drivers were uninjured, but Tiffany was done for the night.  Myers made repairs to his car, and restarted at the tail of the field.

When the field went back to green, Swindell pulled away from Reutimann Sr., while Adams put pressure on Reutimann Sr. to challenge for the second spot. Adams got around Reutimann Sr. on lap eight, but Swindell had pulled out to a full straightaway lead.  Adams closed to within a car length by the 12th lap, and the battle for the lead was on.

Swindell picked up the pace, as sparks began to showers from underneath Swindell's car as it bottomed out entering the turns.  Adams could stay with Swindell, but couldn't make a move to take the lead away.

Reutimann Sr. ran into a serious problem while running third on lap 19 when his car erupted in flames from an oil fire.  Reutimann Sr. brought the car to safe stop in the grass inside turn three, and quickly bailed out of the car uninjured, as the fire blew itself out.  Swindell led Adams, Reutimann Jr., Gohn, Martin, Gray, Butler, Mader and Myers down for the restart with 12 to go.

Swindell and Adams pulled away from the rest of the field, while Myers got busy driving from tenth to fifth.  As Swindell took the checkered flag five car-lengths ahead of Adams, Gohn spun in the grass in turn four while running fourth.  The car executed a series of barrel rolls, and Gohn walked away uninjured.

In preliminary action, Gray won the four-lap Air Flow Research Power Dash, Martin won the Engler Machine and Tool first eight-lap heat race, and Butler won the ButlerBuilt second eight-lap heat race.

The next events for the O'Reilly USCS will be a pair of Florida State Championship Races, as the series returns to dirt track action at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, FL on October 21 and 22.  The event will also be featured by the 8th Annual Air Flow Research Super Power Dash, a ten-car, ten-lap race paying $5,000-to-win.
