TUSCUMBIA, AL - Tim Montgomery of Fredrickstown, MO paced the O'Reilly United Sprint Car Series entrants during preliminary action Friday night for the Thunder Bowl 2005 at North Alabama Speedway. Montgomery set a new all-time track record during qualifications, and also won the Engler Machine and Tool first 12-lap Qualifying Race.
Montgomery toured the 3/8-mile high-banked clay oval in 12.294 seconds for an average speed of 109.810 miles per hour driving the Carry All Service Maxim/Wesmar. The top 15 qualifiers broke the old North Alabama Speedway all-time track record set by a Super Late Model at 13.560 seconds.
The top three finishers in the three 12-lap Qualifying Races transferred to Saturday night's Thunder Bowl 2005 40-lap A-Main. Drivers that finished fourth on back in each qualifying race will line up in Saturday night's 15-lap B-Main and battle for the remaining 11 starting positions.
Ricky Stenhouse Jr. of Olive Branch, MS won the ButlerBuilt second 12-lap Qualifying Race in the Fast Effects J&J/Dynotech. Mike Ward of Memphis, TN drove the AMC Maxim/McCarver to victory in the Koolbeans Trophies third 12-lap Qualifying Race.
