KENNY ADAMS CAPTURES FIRST O'REILLY USCS WIN OF 2006 AT FIVE FLAGS
March 11, 2006
PENSACOLA, FL - Kenny Adams of Malabar, Florida opened the 2006 O'Reilly Auto Parts United Sprint Car Series Asphalt Thunder Tour season with a victory Friday night in the 30-lap main event at Five Flags Speedway. Adams who started fourth had to hustle to get past two of the nations best young drivers and then a tough veteran. The Malabar Missile passed nineteen year old Danny “Hammer” Martin, Jr., from Sarasota, Florida and sixteen year old Matt Tiffany from Daytona Beach, Florida on lap ten before beating early race leader Terry Gray from Bartlett, Tennessee across the stripe on lap eleven. Adams led lead the rest of the way to capture his first win of the young season and ran his O’Reilly USCS career win total to ninety-four driving his #4A Don Ott powered Shaw car.
Two cautions in the first nine laps helped Adams who started fourth, stay in contention early while Gray, Tiffany and Martin battled for the point. Gray prevailed and appeared to be in command of the race until the second caution for Doug Berryman and Willie Stauffer on lap nine bunched the field behind him again. After the restart Adams got around Tiffany and Martin on the next lap and passed Gray one circuit later and raced home with the win. Gray followed in the runner-up spot and Martin got past Tiffany for his spot on the podium. Ryan Myers from Eldorado, Ohio completed the top five with his strongest run of the season.
Tom Winegardner, Jr. from Pierson, Florida rallied from his eleventh starting spot to finish an impressive sixth. Charlie Ladner from Brandon, Florida who missed time trials because of a fuel system problem drove Mac Steele’s #0 to a seventh place finish. Stephen Darvalics from Venice, Florida recovered from a practice session accident to finish eighth followed by Angola, Indiana veteran Hurryin’ Hank Lower in ninth and Jason Kemp from Mansfield, Ohio rounded out the top ten.
2005 O’Reilly USCS Rookie of the Year Bryn Gohn from Malabar, Florida brought out the first caution when he lost a driveline on lap four ending his night. Doug Berryman who started in the scratch position after failing to go to the scales after winning the Butlerbuilt Second Heat Race was victim of mechanical failures causing the lap nine caution and went to the infield for the balance of the race. Gohn was the recipient of the Weld Racing Hard Luck Award.
Adams who was the fastest qualifier with a lap of 14.905 around the half mile paved oval completed a sweep of the event with the feature win after capturing the Lucas Oil Power Dash and Engler Machine and Tool first eight-lap heat race as well. Martin was awarded the win in the ButlerBuilt second eight-lap heat race after Berryman’s failure to weight.
The O'Reilly USCS Asphalt Thunder Tour moves 80 miles down Interstate 10 to the West to Mobile International Speedway in Mobile, AL on Saturday night. Kenny Adams can pickup the $1000 gulf Coast Sprint Car Challenge bonus posted by the speedways if he captures Saturday night’s feature at Mobile.
