ADAMS SWEEPS GULF COAST CHALLENGE $$ WITH WIN AT MOBILE

March 12, 2006
MOBILE, AL -
Kenny Adams of Malabar, Florida rolled to his second O'Reilly Auto Parts United Sprint Car Series victory of the early season before a near sellout crowd at Mobile International Speedway on Saturday night. Adams completed a sweep of the two night O'Reilly USCS' “Gulf Coast Outlaw Sprint Car Challenge” after winning the 30 lap O'Reilly USCS feature at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida on Friday night. By doing so, he collected an extra $1000 bonus posted by the promoters of the two speedways for any O'Reilly USCS sprint car driver who could win at both tracks over their 2006 season opening weekend. This ran his total winnings for the weekend to a healthy $5600.00. The win was Adams' second of the young season and O'Reilly USCS career win number ninety-five (95) for the Malabar Missle.

Adams captured the K&N Filters Pole Award after turning a blistering fast time lap of 14.648 seconds around the big half-mile oval and then drew a zero in the inversion order. Before he could turn that quick lap and lucky draw combination into a big payday he would have to beat a field that included several of the Nation's best young pavement drivers and some cagey veterans. Sixteen-year-old Matt Tiffany from Daytona Beach, Florida, nineteen-year-old Ryan Myers from Eldorado, Ohio and perennial veteran rival and four time O'Reilly USCS champion Terry Gray from Bartlett, Tennessee surrounded him in the first two rows.

At the drop of green flag Adams was challenged hard by the outside pole starter Tiffany, but, charged hard into turn one to ward off the teenager's first attempt at spoiling his march to the bonus paycheck. Tiffany, a 2005 National Sprint Car Hall of Fame Rookie of the Year nominee was able to keep it within six to eight car lengths for the first eight laps before Danny Martin, Jr.'s rear-end failure brought out the yellow flag for the first time to bunch the field behind Adams. Tiffany, Myers, Gray, and the “Buckeye Bandit” Doug Berryman from Fremont, Ohio resumed the chase in that order when the green flag flew again.

On lap thirteen Tom Winegardner, Jr. from Pierson, Florida lost a suspension part and cut his own tire down and rolled to a stop while running sixth in turn two. This brought out flagman Brad Hockaday's second caution of the night closing the field again behind the determined Adams after he had again built a slight advantage over Tiffany, Myers, Gray and Berryman with Willie Stauffer, Charlie Ladner, Jason Kemp, Dave Mader III and Bryn Gohn also in the lead pack.

On lap twenty-five Doug Berryman's right rear axle broke entering turn three at approximately 150 miles per hour and sent him hard to the left and into the infield where he struck a drain culvert and flipped spectacularly two or three times end for end and landed upright. After several anxious moments the twenty two year old young gun was removed from the car and determined to have no serious injuries.

The red flag for Berryman's misfortunes set the stage for the final five-lap dash to the finish line. When the race resumed, Adams appeared to pull out all stops and raced away from Tiffany to cross the finish line with a ten to twelve car length advantage.

But, all the last lap drama anyone could handle occurred when young gun Ryan Myers lost a right rear torsion bar stop while battling with Tiffany for second place exiting turn four looking down the track at the white flag. Myers then steered the car hammer-down fashion all the way around the final four turns while spraying a spectacular shower of sparks from his frame dragging the track. He raced back to the finish line in a determined effort to finish as high as possible under the costly circumstances. Myers only lost two spots and finished in the fifth position. His car had to be delivered to the scales for the post race weight-in and technical inspection area via a roll-back wrecker.

Tiffany was flawless in his effort to finish in the runner-up spot. Points-leader Gray took advantage of Myers misfortunes to finish third. Willie Stauffer from Winter Park, Florida was fourth and Myers fifth. 2005 O'Reilly USCS Rookie of the Year, Bryn Gohn from Malabar, Florida put forth a tireless effort in the pits after several driveline failures to rally from his fourteenth position start to finish sixth and capture the Huggins Cams Hard Charger award for the event. Charlie Ladner from Brandon, Florida was seventh, Jason Kemp from Mansfield, Ohio finished eighth, Dave Mader III from Irvington, Alabama was ninth, and Stephen Darvalics from Venice, Florida rounded out the top ten.

Ryan Myers captured his first Lucas Oil Power Dash win of the 2006 season. The Engler Tool and Machine First Heat was won by Kenny Adams and Terry Gray won the Butlerbuilt Second Heat Race. Tom Winegardner, Jr. was the recipient of the Weld Racing Hard Luck Award after his misfortunes.
