Tiffany captures first 2006 O'Reilly USCS win at Southern National

June 18, 2006: Kenly, NC. - Seventeen year-old Matt Tiffany from Daytona Beach, Florida won the O'Reilly United Sprint Car Series www.uscsracing.com "Asphalt Thunder" Tour main event at Southern National Raceway Park on Saturday night. Tiffany started his night off by setting the fastest qualifying time of 12.445 seconds around the newly re-modeled 4/10 mile asphalt oval. This was one half second faster than the next fastest qualifier. Tiffany then saw his chances for an easy victory fade away when Engler Tool and Machine First Heat Race winner Keith Butler from Riverview, Florida drew the number nine in the K&N Filters Pole Award inversion draw. Butler who had qualified fourth would then start sixth in the main event and Tiffany would be moved all of the way back to the inside of the fifth row on the initial start. It took the talented teenager just seventeen laps to drive to the front of the field in the thirty-five lap race in his white #19T Independent Printing/ Don Ott powered/Shaw winged dirt sprint car. Tiffany became the second driver to win an O'Reilly USCS "Asphalt Thunder" Tour pavement race in as many nights in a car designed primarily for dirt track racing.

Matt Tiffany from Daytona Beach, Florida won his first O'Reilly United Sprint Car Series feature of the season and his second career feature with the series at Southern National Raceway Park on Saturday night. Tiffany set fast time, then started ninth after the inversion draw but used a cool head and fast race car to take the lead on lap seventeen and never looked back for the win Day. Hoosier Tire Young Gun points leader, Danny Martin, Jr. from Sarasota, Florida started next to Stan Butler from Bushnell, Florida and then won the drag race to the first turn. Martin who is also in the runner-up spot in the current O'Reilly USCS point standings, then lead the first fourteen circuits. The veteran Stan Butler trailed Martin through lap six. On lap six Jason Kemp from Mansfield, Ohio took up the chase behind Martin who appeared to have the race under control. On lap eight, current O'Reilly USCS National points leader, Terry Gray from Bartlett, Tennessee who started eighth and the time trial ace, Tiffany raced past Butler into third and fourth places respectively. On lap eleven the tandem squirted past Kemp into positions two and three. On lap fifteen, Gray passed Martin for the lead. Martin appeared to be slowing. On the next lap Tiffany rolled past Martin and took up the chase after Gray. It took him only one lap to squirt under the evening's second fastest qualifier into the lead and he never looked back.

The veteran Gray followed the second year driver home challenging momentarily after two caution periods and red flag for a fuel stop on lap twenty-four bunched the field behind Tiffany. But, each time Tiffany who is third in the National point standings, proved his superiority on this night. Twenty year-old Danny Martin, Jr. who qualified eighth fastest, followed in third place. Stan Butler finished in fourth place and the previous night's winner, Johnny Bridges from Cherryville, North Carolina rounded out the top five.

Nineteen year-old Ryan Myers from Eaton, Ohio who is in second place in the O'Reilly USCS pavement series point standings finished in sixth place. Keith Butler raced his way back to seventh after re-starting at the rear of the field after being involved in a lap-one tangle. Doug Berryman from Mansfield finished eighth in the field of twenty-three drivers from five states, Ray Bragg from Greensboro, North Carolina followed in ninth place and nineteen year-old Hoosier Tire Young Gun, Stephen Darvalics from Venice, Florida rounded out the top ten after starting seventeenth.

Tiffany was the CnB Mushroom Farms Fast Qualifier with a fast lap of 12.445 around the 4/10 mile paved oval. The 10-lap Engler Tool and Machine First Heat Race was won by Keith Butler from Riverview, Florida. The 10-lap Butlerbuilt Second Heat Race went to Danny Martin, Jr. The 10-lap JE Pistons Third Heat Race was won by Ryan Myers. Myers also won the six-lap Lucas Oil Power Dash.

Tiffany captured the evening's Huggins Cams Hard Charger Award for passing eight cars in the A-Main in route to his win. Tiffany was also awarded the Hoosier Tire Young Gun of the Race (for the highest finishing driver under 25 years old). The K&N Filters Pole Award recipient was Stan Butler from Bushnell, Florida. Adam Shaeff from Eaton, Ohio was the Robison Racing Rookie of the Race.
