Mallett Captures First Feature Victory of Season at I-75 Raceway

Mallett Captures First Feature Victory of Season at I-75 Raceway

Inside Line Promotions – SWEETWATER, Tenn. (April 24, 2018) – Jordon Mallett rebounded in a big way last Saturday at I-75 Raceway, where he scored his first win of the season a night after enduring a race-ending crash.

The busy weekend began on Friday at Crossville Speedway in Crossville, Tenn., where Mallett advanced from fourth to second place in the first dash before he won the second dash. He then claimed a heat race victory and started the USCS Series main event on the outside of the front row.

“We had a great car all night,” he said. “We won one of the dashes and could have won the other. We won the heat race, too. In the feature me and the leader checked out. I waited for my opportunity. I cleared him with a slider, but about the time he drove back under me I slid too far and knocked the wall down. It damaged the suspension and shredded a rear tire. We felt like that was our only shot.”

Mallett ran second for the first two thirds of the 30-lap main event before he made a bid for the lead. Unfortunately, he carried too much speed and slid into the wall. The impact damaged his race car and a lap later he pulled into the infield.

“Earlier in the race a lapped car got into me when I passing him,” he said. “It bent the wheel and the left front was going flat. We were able to keep rolling and thought we had a shot at the win. The slide job just didn’t stick before it needed to stick. I limped it around for another lap and then the right rear blew out. I knew the rear suspension was so far gone. I could smell rear end oil and I knew I better pull in before something serious happened.”

Mallett was credited with an 11th-place finish, which snapped his streak of top-10 results that began during the season opener.

“We worked all night to get everything back together, having to replace about everything back there,” he said. “We thrashed so hard. The aggravation was adding up. I was extremely determined to win that deal on Saturday.”

Mallett won a heat race to kick off Saturday’s USCS Series event at I-75 Raceway. He started second in the main event for the second straight night.

“Everything was spot on,” he said. “I stayed right there with Terry (Gray) for the first eight laps and then I drove around him on the outside when we got into some lapped traffic. I put it on cruise control from there on. At one point I noticed his nose wing so I moved to the bottom and stretched it back out. I can’t complain at all with how Saturday went. We didn’t even have to change tires or spacing throughout the night.”

The smooth night and trip to Victory Lane extended Mallett’s lead in the USCS Series national standings to 81 points.

Mallett will return to action this Saturday at Lexington 104 Speedway in Lexington, Tenn., with the USCS Series.
